Narex Profi HSS Woodturning Tools
The new range of cryogenically hardened HSS Narex woodturning tools are nearing completion and due to be released this autumn.
The final piece in the puzzle is the roughing gouge, one of the forgings for which is pictured here.

The new turning tools are made from premium quality Poldi M2 HSS (High Speed Steel). This air hardening tool steel is forged and ground to shape in Bystrice and then its properties are changed by heating it through the hardening temperature in a vacuum chamber. At just the right moment liquid nitrogen at -200 degrees is released into the chamber to extend the cooling phase of the process, during this time the steel transforms, becoming hard and tough with exceptional abrasion resistance. Multi-stage tempering completes the hardening process and the tools go on to be finish ground.
We have been using prototypes of the spindle gouge and scrapers for a couple of months now and have been very impressed with the edge durability - even when turning hard exotic timbers.
The tips of the tools have been intentionally ground at fairly obtuse angles. Since every turner has their own preferred grind, or may use slightly different grinds for different jobs, this leaves the new owner with as much steel as possible to work with.
The shapely beech handles are comfortable and give the turning tools an overall length of 47cm (18-1/2”). For those that prefer to turn their own handles the Profi HSS range will also be available unhandled.
